  1. Parts of speech indicated for heading words are abbreviated as follows:

    Meishi
    (名詞; Nouns)
    〔名〕

    Daimeishi
    (代名詞; Pronouns)
    〔代名〕

    Dōshi
    (動詞;Verbs)
    〔自カ四〕 …… for Jidōshi ka-gyō yodan katsuyō(自動詞カ行四段活用; intransitive verbs with ka-column 4-row conjugations)
    Intransitive and transitive verbs are indicated by 自 and 他 respectively; conjugation gyō and conjugation type are indicated as follows:
    Yo-dan katsuyō
    (四段活用; 4-row conjugation)
    四 (verbs in contemporary forms are indicated by 五 for convenience’s sake)
    Kami ichi-dan katsuyō
    (上一段活用; upper 1-row conjugation)

    Kami ni-dan katsuyō
    (上二段活用; upper 2-row conjugation)

    〔字音語素〕 …… Phonetic elements of Sino-Japanese words that function in ways similar to Zōgoyōso.

    Rengo
    (連語; Compound words)
    〔連語〕 …… Words that are not regarded as independent words even when given in main heading entries.

    Makurakotoba
    (枕詞; Poetic pillow words)
    〔枕〕 …… Pillow words are indicated in much the same way as parts of speech.

    Verbs, adjectives, adjectival verbs and particles of dialects are indicated as 〔動〕〔形〕〔形動〕and 〔助〕, respectively, with detailed notations and classifications omitted.

  2. The following notes which are almost equally important as those in the parts of speech section may appear at the beginning of the definition section of a headword:

    (—す る) is for indicating, with respect to the subsequent definitions, that the headword may also be used as one with sa­-column irregular conjugations. However, this note is omitted in case when all the definitions listed for the headword involve sa-column irregular conjugations of the word.

    ・(形動 and 形動タリ) is for indicating, with respect to the headword or its subsequent definitions, that the word may also be used as a keiyōdōshi (verbal adjectives) and a keiyōdōshi tari-katsuyō (verbal adjectives of tari-declension).



  3. Proper nouns are differentiated from common nouns without specifying their part of speech.
