Dictionary Section

For each headword in this dictionary, a search is made of a group of representative dictionaries compiled from the Heian period to the mid-Meiji period to see if they include the same headword, and the dictionaries in which it appears are indicated in the Jisho (【辞書】;Dictionary) Section by means of their abbreviated titles.
Full and abbreviated titles of the pre-modern dictionaries consulted are as follows. When two or more dictionaries contain entries for a given item, they are listed in the following order:

Words whose dictionary citations are given are limited to items with readings given in the dictionaries concerned, or with readings which, even imperfect, can be readily inferred.
Words that are treated as compound forms in the above dictionaries are divided and cited under the appropriate constituent forms, except when the compound form appears as a main entry or sub-entry in this dictionary.
In dealing with inflected words, those deemed to be derivative nouns are given under noun headings, but all other inflected words are given in their presumed sentence-final form (shūshikei) under the appropriate heading.

Some of the features of the dictionaries listed above are fully respected, while others are taken into account in a selective manner, in accordance with the following general principles:

(a)	Shinsen jikyō (新撰字鏡) is referred to without making distinction between its Tenji edition (天治本) and Kyōwa edition (享和本). However, only entries given in Man’yōgana or similar ones are taken into consideration.
(b)	Wamyō ruijushō (和名類聚抄) is referred to without making distinction between its 10-volume Senchū edition (箋注本) and 20-volume Genna edition (元和本). Entries are taken into consideration in accordance with the same criteria as those applied to Shinsen jikyō.
(c)	Iroha jiruishō (色葉字類抄) is referred to without making distinction between its Maeda edition (前田本) and Kurokawa edition (黒川本). However, in cases when word forms of entries given in the first and second volumes of the two editions are not the same, only entries in the Maeda edition are adopted. Among single-character Chinese words, those which can be ascertained to be individual words are taken into consideration, but those which are deemed to be jiongoso (Sino-Japanese phonetic element entries) are not.
(d)	Reference to Ruiju myōgishō (類聚名義抄) is made on the basis of its Kanchiin edition (観智院本), but in cases when entries rendered in wrong characters were corrected by Kōzanji edition (高山寺本), Renseiin edition (蓮成院本), etc. the corrected entries are taken into consideration.
(e)	Reference to Kagakushū (下学集) is made on the basis of the 1617 (Genna 3; 元和三年) edition, taking into consideration words with kun readings attached on either side of the main text, as well as words in the annotations so long as they are attached with kun readings.
(f)	Reference to Wagyokuhen (or Wagokuhen; 和玉篇) is made on the basis of the 1610 (Keichō 15; 慶長十五年) edition, taking into consideration only Japanese readings of Chinese characters.
(g)	Reference to Bunmeibon setsuyōshū (文明本節用集) is made in the same way as that to Kagakushū (下学集).
(h)	Reference to six versions of Setsuyōshū (節用集) including Ikyōshū (伊京集) is made in the same as that to Kagakushū (下学集), but none of the later additions found in the 1590 edition of Setsuyōshū (Tenshō jūhachinenbon setsuyōshū; 天正十八年本節用集) are taken into consideration.
(i)	Reference to Nippojisho (日葡辞書) is limited only to headwords.
(j)	Reference to Shogen jikō setsuyōshū (書言字考節用集) is made with regard to headwords in the 1717 (Kyōho 2; 享保二年) edition, taking into consideration all the kun readings attached to either side of the main text, as well as words in the annotations so long as they are attached with kun readings.
